Anesthesia Options

A Comfortable Surgical Experience

Most dental procedures will require some form of anesthetic to prevent any pain or discomfort during treatment. We offer multiple anesthesia options, and the option you choose will be determined by your procedure and your preferences. Dr. Philip Engel, Dr. Richard Stern, Dr. Constantine Simos, Dr. Michael Stern, Dr. Amy Tanchyk, and Dr. Rohan Prabhu are trained in all forms of outpatient anesthesia. All oral surgeons receive the highest anesthesia training of any dental specialty, so you can rest assured that your procedure will be as safe and comfortable as possible.

Types of Anesthesia

We offer several types of anesthesia to ensure patients remain comfortable in our care.

Board-Certified Anesthesia Specialists

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are the only dental professionals qualified to administer all types of anesthesia. General dentists may administer local anesthesia for minor procedures, such as simple tooth extractions, but when a patient requires more complex care or sedation, he or she is referred to an oral surgeon.

In addition to their residency training, every oral surgeon at Oral Surgery Group is board-certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS). This certification ensures that our patients are treated with the highest level of care possible. This includes the safe administration, monitoring, and management of anesthesia and sedation services.

Before your procedure, your surgeon will go over your anesthesia options and give you a full explanation of any pre-operative instructions to prepare you for your surgery. Your safety and comfort are very important to us, and one of our staff members will be happy to discuss your anesthesia options with you during your consultation appointment. We proudly offer these anesthesia and sedation options at all of our offices in New Brunswick, NJ, East Brunswick, NJ, and Middlesex, NJ.

EXPAREL® for Long-Lasting Pain Control After Surgery

Oral Surgery Group has been committed to providing the people of central New Jersey with top-notch oral surgery care for over 60 years. As part of that commitment, providing an opioid-free pain management option for our patients is a given. That is why our board-certified oral surgeons offer EXPAREL in our treatment plans. EXPAREL is a clinically proven, safe, and opioid-free medication that dramatically reduces post-surgical pain for 3–4 days. This reduces or eliminates the need for opioids.

Benefits of EXPAREL

EXPAREL is administered by your oral surgeon directly to the surgical site while under anesthesia. There are numerous benefits to this single-dose pain management option:

  • There is no risk of opioid dependence and withdrawal, as EXPAREL is not a narcotic medication.
  • You can postpone or even eliminate the need to fill prescription narcotic pain medications.
  • You will not experience a gap in pain control after surgery because one dose of this sustained-release medication applied during your surgery will be controlling your post-operative discomfort before your anesthesia has even worn off.
  • EXPAREL is ideal for many oral surgery procedures, including wisdom teeth removal, dental implant placement, tooth extractions, and more.

Approximately 80 percent of people who use the illegal drug heroin first misused opioid-based prescription medications, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. At our practice, we want to keep each one of our patients healthy, happy, and free of the risks and side effects of narcotic prescription medications. During your consultation, we will discuss if EXPAREL is right for you.
