About Dr. Engel
Dr. Philip Engel was born in New Jersey, and his father — who was also an oral surgeon — piqued his interest in dentistry. Dr. Engel has over 30 years of experience helping patients in his private practice as well as in hospital settings. He is chief of the Department of Dentistry and Oral Surgery at Robert Wood Johnson University and an Assistant Clinical Professor at Rutgers Medical School. He is also on staff at St. Peters University Hospital.
After earning his undergraduate degree in biology from Vanderbilt University, Dr. Engel attended dental school at the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry (DMD) degree as well as a master’s in education. As an educator, Dr. Engel understands the importance of clear and open communication, especially when it comes to health care.
After finishing dental school, Dr. Engel did a general practice residency at the VA Hospital in Houston, Texas. He then completed his three-year oral and maxillofacial residency at University Hospital in Newark. There, he gained experience performing extractions, reconstructive surgery, facial trauma management, and dental implant placement, before going into private practice at Oral Surgery Group. He still works closely with dental residents and staff at local hospitals teaching students and treating patients in need of more extensive care.
Dr. Engel has completed his board certification, which means that he is qualified to treat patients at the highest standard of care set by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He is also certified by the National Board of Dental Anesthesiology. He is up to date in all of his certifications and frequently participates in continuing education events to further his knowledge of advances in the field.
He has served as the president the New Jersey Society of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons and Middlesex County Dental Society.
Outside of work, Dr. Engel enjoys running, reading, movies, and spending time with his family.
